Sallie McCorkle (USA) »Rock Rose« – Interactive search project
Visiting Artist
The Rose Rock is the official rock of the state of Oklahoma, USA. The rocks resemble full-grown roses and were formed by barite rock crystals during the Permian Age. They are found in a few rare places around the globe. In Oklahoma, the distinctive red soil colors them in hues ranging from reddish brown to cinnamon. An old Cherokee legend says the rocks represent the blood and tears of the Native American Indians who made the devastating "Trail of Tears" journey in the 1800s to Oklahoma.
250 cards with handpainted Rock Roses were left by Sallie McCorkle in Darmstadt and distributed during all opening days of the information booth on the trees of the forest. The visitors found the cards and brought them back to the booth. There they completed a brief questionnaire about their thoughts and experiences on the Forest Art Path. They received an actual Rose Rock from Oklahoma as a gift from the artist.
