Dorothee Bielfeld (Bochum/Germany) »tree cinema« – Installation
We cannot reach the upper levels of the forest without some kind of assistance; they remain hidden, removed, an object of desire. It is precisely here that the forest unfolds its greatest dynamic; it changes form in a very fast rhythm, especially when the wind blows. With her installation of slightly sloping mirrored surfaces close to the ground, Dorothee Bielfeld puts the treetops of beech-wood into the visitor’s zone of experience – in a visual way, as we are trained to perceive. Thus the title of the artwork “tree cinema” deliberately refers to the entertainment that is generally demanded of nature. The elevation of the forest from below, which people rarely look at for any considerable length of time, is framed and thus brought into the picture. By moving through the forest the visitor awakes the rigid mirrors into slow moving sequences, which are enhanced by the wind blowing through the treetops. The “tree cinema” invites the visitor to meditate, consider and engage with the forest, the tree and himself.
“You feel like you are flying through the air and the treetops.”
